TIPS TO PREVENT HAIR EXTENSION DISCOLORATION

TIPS TO PREVENT HAIR EXTENSION DISCOLORATION

Summertime is here and all we want to do is lay by the pool and splash around in salty oceans...but, with our extensions in of course.

So, what does that extra UV time and chlorine-filled water mean for your extensions?...
The honest truth is that summertime, warm-weather activities and especially swimming in bodies of water are NOT advised when wearing extensions.
With a luxury product like Bombshell Extensions, during the manufacturing process, virgin hair is mixed and processed to reach the desired shade(s), resulting in a highly processed, porous set of hair. Hair extensions are much more porous than our regular hair and with the root no longer being attached to the scalp, it doesn't receive the natural oils and nutrients to act as a protective barrier. All of these factors result in making the extensions more prone to damage & discoloration.

Having extensions in a summer/vacation environment make them the first target for a tiny bit of sunscreen or an unknown mineral from a body of water to quickly soak into them, strip the moisture, and discolor even the highest quality extensions. You'll need to give some extra love and attention to your hair to maintain the integrity of your extensions during the summer months. We suggest swapping out your wefts for a few weeks and wear our Clip-ins for any trips involving these situations/chemicals/activities so that the hair can be removed to prevent damage.

MORE ON DISCOLORATION & DRYNESS:

As referenced in our Official Hair Care Guide, we do NOT recommend swimming with your extensions. The risks include: hair discoloration (hair turning peach/orange), absorption of unknown elements in various bodies of water that can cause damage to hair & extensions, tangling & matting, and excessive dryness.
**If you do choose to swim with your hair extensions, please know that you are doing so at your own risk and Bombshell Extension Co. is not responsible for a refund or replacement of any kind**
**If choosing to swim, take the time to prep your hair by rinsing with water to reduce the absorption of chlorine and salt. Dry hair acts like a sponge, so taking a dip without the extra moisture will cause you to absorb an excess of the bad stuff that can damage your hair and extensions. Keep hair gently pulled back in a secure braid to avoid matting. Avoid soaking your hair too much when swimming (ideally not at all), as it can loosen the integrity of the bonds. Immediately after swimming, rinse through your hair with water to limit further damage. Wash with a professional-grade sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to remove all impurities and add back in that dose of moisture.

As stated perfectly by https://www.hairextensionsbff.com:
Discoloration can be caused by a number of different factors, for example:

Hard Water –  Hard water can cause hair extension discoloration, learn more about Hard Water and Hair Extension Care.

Sun Exposure – Sun exposure can cause hair extensions to lighten and change color, learn more about Protecting Your Hair From The Sun.

Wear a hat: Just as overexposure to the sun is damaging to our skin, the same can be said for our hair. Sun damage to your hair presents itself as dry and brittle, broken or split ends, frizziness, and discoloration. The sun’s UV rays act similar to bleach on the hair. Bleach mixes with the melanin in hair and strips the color, damages the hair’s cuticle and coveted keratin protein.

Salt Water – Salt Water can cause hair extensions to become dry and strip it of its color, learn more about how Salt Water Affect Hair Extensions.

Chlorine – Chlorine Exposure can change hair extension color from anything between bright green and pink! Learn How To Protect Hair From The Affects Of Chlorine.

FAQ'S:

CAN I GET A REFUND/REPLACEMENT PACK OF HAIR FOR EXTENSIONS CHANGING COLOR?
No, Bombshell Extension Co. is not responsible for a refund or replacement of any kind when extensions are not maintained as advised during warm weather months/activities.

DOES THIS ONLY HAPPEN TO BLONDES?
Although this is more likely in blonde/lighter shades, as they are more heavily processed, it can happen to all colors of extensions.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN MORE WITH BLONDES?
The short answer is because blonde hair is lighter, or less pigmented, than all other hair colors. Less pigmentation means that there is less color saturation in the hair, leaving room for outside substances to stain and color the hair (think of how white sheets stain more easily than brown or black ones). More lightness means that subtle changes in the hair are drastically more visible (think of how a stain on a white sheet is more pronounced than a stain on a brown or black sheet).

WHAT DO I DO IF I'M GOING ON VACATION AND CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT EXTENSIONS?
We suggest wearing our Clip-ins for any travel trips involving these situations/chemicals/activities so that the hair can be removed to prevent damage and worn during a bit safer/evening activities.

WHAT ARE MINERAL DEPOSITS?
Mineral deposits are buildups of natural, inorganic solids like copper and iron on the scalp and hair shaft. These deposits can chemically react with the proteins in your hair, leaving you with dull, brittle, discolored tresses. This is true of both color-treated hair and natural hair, though color-treated hair (extensions) is more susceptible to color change because of its porosity (higher absorbency).
Minerals can be found in everything from your pool water to your well water, and you can be sure that this hard, mineral-intense water is making it to your shower nozzle every time you turn it on. Mineral intensity and composition can vary by region, so one user may experience a different reaction to minerals than another user that lives in a different region. Repeated exposure to these minerals results in buildup, and buildup enables the minerals to react with the hair.
Minerals to look out for are: Oxidized copper, which can be found in both pool water and shower water, is known to turn blonde hair green. Iron is typical of well water, and it can leave blonde hair brassy and orange, or even pink!

HOW DO I PREVENT MINERAL BUILD-UP?
There are lots of things you can do to prevent mineral buildup in your hair. First, you’ll want to address your water. Consider buying a water filter for your shower (we love THIS one), washing the hair with distilled water, or washing with only cold water to seal the cuticle and prevent minerals from getting in. Next, you should address any problems with hair porosity prior to exposing the hair to hard, mineral-rich water. This could involve avoiding heat styling tools, applying a pre-shower or pre-swimming leave-in conditioner to pre-saturate hair, or applying hot-oil treatments for long-term moisture saturation.

HAIR CARE GUIDE

HAIR CARE GUIDE

Our official Hair Care Guide for your Bombshell Extension Co. products.
100 % Premium Remy Human Hair
www.bombshellextensions.com
HAIR CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Brushing:
Brush your hair gently, starting at the ends and working your way up to the root. Use a boar or nylon bristle brush that works gently over extensions. Avoid excessive pulling or aggressive brushing to maintain extension quality. Washing:
Before washing hair extensions, brush thoroughly to remove any teasing or tangles. Gently hand wash hair extensions with a sulfate free, color safe shampoo & conditioner in lukewarm water. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Avoid applying conditioner to the bond (Tape-Ins & Keratin Fusion) as it can loosen the application. For Hand-Tied, Beaded Wefts, & I-Tips, be gentle with scalp conditioning as the application site is still not your natural hair. Rinse with cold water to seal moisture into your cuticle. Use a deep conditioner once every 2 weeks to maintain quality.

Drying:
Gently dry the base of extensions first with a hair towel, then move to ends making sure it’s 80% dry before you use your detangling brush (Sheila stotts or Bombshell). Start at your ends when brushing. Apply a leave in conditioner product or serum (isles formula or virtue labs). Air dry hair is not suggested, use a hair dryer to ensure a smooth finish. Do not exceed medium heat setting on dryer. Use a concentrator on hairdryer to avoid tangling/matting of the hair. Styling:
Apply a leave-in conditioner to shield hair from heat damage. Do not exceed medium heat setting. The hair extensions can be styled using wire brushes or boar bristle brushes. To restyle, a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron may be used.
Use a hair oil consistently and as often as individually needed. Our scalp only produces enough natural oils for our natural hair, so you will need to supplement with a hair serum to allow continued moisture for your extensions. Always use a detangler + oil on the extensions after you shower and before you brush out your hair.

Coloring & Toning: We cannot guarantee the quality of our extensions after any dye, toner, bleach, perm, keratin, or straightening treatment is performed. If you do wish to use such products, always try a test strip before proceeding to make sure you are satisfied with the results. The use of chemical may damage the extensions. Always see a professional for any services you wish to perform on your extensions. Sleeping:
Sleep with hair into a low ponytail or braid to ensure hair doesn’t tangle when sleeping. Never go to bed with your hair wet. Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Swimming/Fitness:
We do NOT recommend swimming with your extensions. The risks include: hair discoloration (blondes turning peach/orange), absorption of unknown elements in various bodies of water that can cause damage to hair & extensions, tangling & matting, and excessive dryness. If you do choose to swim with your hair extensions, please know that you are doing so at your own risk. If choosing to swim, take the time to prep your hair by rinsing with water to reduce the absorption of chlorine and salt. Avoid soaking your hair too much when swimming, as it can loosen the integrity of the bonds.Immediately after swimming, rinse through your hair with water to limit further damage. Wash with a professional-grade sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to remove all impurities and add back in that dose of moisture. Installation:
Installation of hair extensions must be performed by a Licensed & Certified Hair Extension Specialist or Bombshell Certified Hair Extension Specialist. Your natural hair can be severely damaged if hair extensions are not installed properly. Do not exceed the recommended time-frames for maintenancing your extensions. If you extend the maintenance period and do not use proper care + proper products in your daily lifestyle, we cannot guarantee the quality of the hair extensions or your natural hair.

Customer Responsibility:
It is the buyer’s responsibility to inspect the hair and its’ quality prior to removing it from the original packaging. If there are any quality concerns, please return the hair in its’ original condition so we can properly refund or exchange the product. Once hair is removed from the original packaging, the hair cannot be replaced for any reason.

Remember:
Extensions are not your natural hair, special care and attention needs to be taken when caring for your hair extensions. Please see our website for the most up to date product recommendations for washing, drying, styling, and general maintenance.
VACATION HAIR:
Sunscreen:
Sunscreen WILL discolor your extensions. Do everything you possibly can to avoid your hair coming in contact with sunscreen. Putting sunscreen on your body and shoulders with your hair out of the way is NOT enough to keep sunscreen off of your extensions, as your hair may fall against your shoulder and even a simple rubbing can attach to the hair and cause it to turn colors. Spray sunscreen is highly discouraged when trying to avoid sunscreen product toughing your extensions.Sunscreen will cause your extensions to turn an orange/peach color and there is nothing that can be done to get them back to their original color. You will need to replace your extensions if your hair becomes discolored, so please, take great care in using sunscreen.

Swimming in the Pool or Ocean:
We do NOT recommend swimming with your extensions. The risks include: hair discoloration (blondes turning peach/orange), absorption of unknown elements in various bodies of water that can cause damage to hair & extensions, tangling & matting, and excessive dryness. If you do choose to swim with your hair extensions, please know that you are entering at your own risk.If choosing to swim, take the time to prep your hair by rinsing with water to reduce the absorption of chlorine and salt. Wash with a professional-grade sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to remove all impurities and add back in that dose of moisture.

UV Rays:
Keep your hair pulled back under a hat to protect your haircolor, excess dryness, etc.

SUNSCREEN & HAIR EXTENSIONS

SUNSCREEN & HAIR EXTENSIONS

First, a little about why it’s so important to use the right sunscreen when you have luxury hair extensions, (via: https://www.hji.co.uk/hair-extensions/what-to-tell-clients-sun-sea-and-hair-extensions/ ):
HOW DOES SUNSCREEN AFFECT HAIR EXTENSIONS?
We are all aware of sunscreen staining clothes, but SPF protection could also be staining your extensions hair too. Dyed blonde hair or blonde hair extensions are particularly susceptible to discoloration; turning pink or orange in patches at the ends of their hair. Those with darker locks, may notice a slight change in color, but the effect is much more noticeable on blonde hair which has been subject to more processing.
WHAT’S IN SUNSCREEN THAT CAUSES THE HAIR TO DISCOLOR?
1) Avebenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) which is an oil-soluble ingredient used in sunscreen products to absorb the full spectrum of UVA rays.
2) Octocrylene, which is added as a stabiliser as the Avebenzone degrades in light. Together they are found in differing quantities in sun protections. WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT ALL?
Essentially the color change is as a result of a chemical reaction. When the sunscreen is absorbed into the hair and exposed to the UV light, it causes the cells to break down in a process known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). The cells break down and seek out electron particles to form a new cell structure. When the hair is rinsed in water, from showers and pools, then the electron particles in the minerals in the water such as Iron, Copper, Magnesium, Calcium and Silica, attach to the hair cells creating a reaction.

AMANDA DIEDRICH

BOMBSHELL EDUCATOR
Amanda Diedrich of @blohaute

Location: Chicago
IG: @blohaute

How did you get started in the Hair industry?
I was always in love with hair and constantly finding ways to do my friend’s hair. It took a little time convincing my dad to let me go to cosmetology school while I was already attending college in downtown Chicago. I finally got the ‘OK’ from him, and I started at Tricoci University and then got my first salon job at Mario Tricoci as a color assistant. The rest is history

What are your 3 must-have hair products?
A good texture spray is always my #1, I’m currently loving the OUAI Texturizing Spray.
Next up, is a good volumizing powder to make my ponytails fluffy (forever my fave is the Oribe Swept Up Volume Powder).
Lastly, a static spray for frizz sheets, these things are total game changers (IGK or Oaui are my go to brands for these type of products).

If you could have dinner with one person living or deceased, whom would it be?
Jen Atkin. Best hairstylist ever. I just want to hangout with her and pick her brain, she’s a hair genius!

What’s your current favorite hair trend?
Ponytails…I don’t know if that’s really a trend, but a good ponytail is magical.

If you could style one celebrity’s hair, who would it be?
Bella Hadid…no explanation necessary.

Describe a typical day-in-your life?
Wake up around 5:30am – head out to clients until about 3pm. –Come home and hangout with my daughter (aka #blohautemini), and then either head back out for evening clients or pay Target a visit for no apparent reason..

What’s the one habit everyone can do to get better/healthier hair?
Stop washing your hair so much.

Do you have an inspiring female role models or mentors?
Jen Atkin (I swear I’m not obsessed).

Do you have any tips for artists starting out in the industry?
For new artists: find your nitch. Discover what your style/vibe is and run with it. And of course, instagram, instagram, instagram.

What do you do to feel more inspired?
Traveling has started to become a way for me to find inspiration, or even just walking around Chicago. And, of course social media and looking at other amazing hairstylists/artists.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
From my dad, when I was questioning whether or not I wanted to stay in the salon world or go back to school… He said something along the lines of “As long as you’re good at it and it’s what you love doing, you’ll find a way to make it successful.” I’ve never heard something as true

What’s been your proudest moment in the industry?
Definitely starting Blohaute and becoming my own brand vs. working under someone else’s name.

What would be your career path in another life?
Nursing, it’s what I was going to school for before deciding on my love for hair,.

What is your favorite Bombshell Extensions Co product?
Rooted Tape Ins…and Cari, the Owner
